About Our Parish

In 1945 the Claretian Fathers established the parish and used St. Elizabeth as a base of operations for mission activity all over the East Side area.  Father Michael Sheahan, a native of County Cork, Ireland, was named Pastor of Santa Isabel in 1939.  For 33 years the Irish priest, previously the founding pastor of La Soledad-served the Mexican community.  During his pastorate he had to face the demolition of the old church to make way for the new Golden State Freeway that cut across the parish site at Boyle and Opal. Today Santa Isabel Church has recently celebrated 100 years.

The Roman Catholic Community of St. Isabel Church, belonging to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles has been called to serve God to arouse lay and religious missionaries to bring salvation to all through the preaching of the Word of God.
